ERYTHRINA CRISTA-GALLI

Origen: Brasil, Argentina, Paraguay y Uruguay.

Es un pequeño arbolito que si no se poda suele conservar porte arbustivo y que puede alcanzar hasta 9 metros de altura pero que, en ocasiones, es cultivado casi como una planta herbácea que se poda casi a ras de suelo al final de cada temporada.

Se reproduce con cierta facilidad por semillas y también por esquejes.

Teóricamente es la más resistente al frío de todos los "árboles coral" pero en Recregarden no hemos tenido mucha suerte.  Hemos tenido tres ejemplares: uno adquirido en un vivero y dos obtenidos desde semilla y ninguno ha sobrevivido. Después de cada invierno rebrotaban con menos vigor que el año anterior hasta que un año ya no rebrotaron. Nunca conseguimos que florecieran. Sin embargo cerca de Recregarden, en unas condiciones climáticas muy similares, sí hay varios arbolitos que prosperan sin problemas. 

Este año (2014-15) lo hemos intentado por cuarta vez y hemos conseguido tres solitarias flores.

It´s a little tree that, if not pruned, usually keeps an shruby shape and can grow to 9 metres tall. Sometimes is treated almost as an herbaceous plant being cut back almost to the ground after flowering is over.

Propagation is not difficult by seeds and also by cuttings.

Theoretically it´s the hardiest of all coral trees but here in Recregarden we haven´t been very successfull growing them. We have tried with three specimen, one from a nursery and two from seeds. After every new winter the plants grew back less vigorously that the previous year until the didn´t come back any more. They never bloomed. However very near Recregarden and under very similar climatic conditions some little trees thrive without problems. 
This year (2014-15) we´ve tried for fouth time and we have gor three solitary flowers.
