Every year, in spring and summer, new plants arrive to Recregarden, most of them are seedlings or cuttings. Some of them flowers in their first season. Others don´t survive their first winter.
These are some of the plants I will add next season, after testing their cold hardiness.

AN UNEXPECTED FLOWERING

Three years ago, in the first days of december, I took from a garden some cuttings of what I thought (and I still think) it was an Epyphillum. All the cuttings rooted and produced new cuttings that also rooted. (That´s  the only plant in Recregarden we can say we have a 100% rooting percentage) .

A few weeks ago I discovered 10 little buds in two of the original plants. All  but one fell down but that single survivor grew until becoming the flower you can see in the pictures.

DICKSONIA ANTARCTICA

DICKSONIA ANTARCTICA

English version:
Origin: Southeastern Australia and Tasmania
Common name: Soft Tree Fern, Tasmanian Tree Fern
It´s a slow growing tree fern that, in its native habitat, grows from 6 to 15 metres in height with a trunk (stipe) up to one metre wide.
For optimal growing conditions it needs plenty of humidity, in the soil as well as in the air. It doesn´t withstand too hot temperatures. It´s perhaps the hardiest tree fern. Fronds die when temperatures drop below -3ºC (26,5ºF) but the stipe of well stablished specimens can withstand temperatures below -10ºC (14ºF).

Our Cycas rumphii has produced its first sexual organ, commonly known as cones, and now we know thar our specimen is a male. In the last pictures you can see a closer view of pollen sacs where pollen is kept.

CAMPSIS X TAGLIABUANA

CAMPSIS X TAGLIABUANA

English version:
It´s an hybrid between Campsis radicans, native to Southeastern USA, and Campsis grandiflora, native to China, obtained in the 1850s in the nursery of the Tagliabue brothers, near Milan.
There are several cultivars, some of them more commonly seen in gardens than either of its parents.
In the last three pictures you can see differences in shape between flowers of Campsis x tagliabuana (right) and  Campsis radicans (left). Differences in color are not significant as they depend on the different cutivars.
