SCHEFFLERA ACTINOPHYLLA (sin. Brassaia actinophylla)

Origen: bosques tropicales de Nueva Guinea y Norte de australia.

Esta planta, normalmente cultivada como planta de interior, en realidad es un árbol que puede alcanzar 12 metros de altura.

Se la conoce como "árbol paraguas" (por la forma colgante de sus hojas) o "árbol pulpo" por la forma de sus inflorescencias (largas espigas de flores rojas extendidas de forma radial, que sólo aparecen en ejemplares adultos).

Se reproduce por esquejes o semillas.

Sólo soporta heladas muy débiles y, aún así, las hojas resultan dañadas.

Origin: Tropical forest of New Guinea and Northern Australia

Common names: Queensland umbrella tree, Octopus Tree.

This plant, usually grown as indoor plant, is a tree that may reach 12 metres tall.

Its common names refer to the shape of leafleats (like an umbrella) or to the shape of the cluster of red flowers arranged in spectacular radiating spikes. Only mature plants flower.

Propagation is by cuttings or seeds.

It withstands only very light frosts, having some leaves burning.

Origen: Este de México y zona del Caribe.

Como su propio nombre indica, este cactus (cereus) es de floración nocturna (selene=luna) y produce grandes flores blancas, muy olorosas y seguidas de una fruta comestible. Las flores permanecen abiertas una sola noche. En Recregarden hemos tenido este verano (2013) nuestra primera flor. Ha sido sólo una pero espectacular. la suerte de que florezca.

Es un cactus trepador que puede alcanzar más de 3 metros de altura.

Se reproduce por esquejes.

Soporta heladas débiles siempre que sean cortas y esté plantado en un lugar protegido.

Origin: Eastern Mexico, Caribbean area.

Common name: Queen of the Night.

As its scientific name shows this plant is a cactus (cereus) with nocturnal flowers (selene=moon) that are very big, white, sweetly scented and followed by edible fruits. Flowers are opened just a single night. Here in Recregarden we,ve had this summer (2013) our first blooming. It has been just a single flowers but spectacular. 

It´s a climbing cactus that reaches more than 3 metres in height.

Propagation is by cuttings.

It withstands light frosts if grown in a sheltered place.

Por primera vez uno de los helechos "cuerno de alce" produce esporas, es decir "esporula". Como esta especie no produce vástagos la única forma de reproducirlo es por esporas. He leído que es difícil. Vamos a intentarlo.

For first time one of the "staghorn  ferns" produces spores. As this species doesn´t produce offsets spores is the only way of propagation. I´ve read it´s difficult. We´re going to try...

Origen: Madagascar

El flanboyán está considerado como el árbol de flor más bello del mundo. Desgraciadamente no soporta el frío y mucho menos las heladas por lo que sólo el hecho de que sobreviva invierno tras invierno ya es un triunfo. En áreas tropicales o subtropicales puede crecer hasta los 12 metros con una copa aplanada que puede alcanzar otros tantos metros de anchura. Aquí en Recregarden es caducifolio perdiendo todas las hojas en invierno. Sus hojas recuerdan a las de un helecho y son muy parecidas a las del jacarandá.

Sólo conozco dos ejemplares en Huelva (adjunto foto de uno de ellos con una solitaria flor) y ambos crecen en puntos más protegidos del frío que Recregarden. Espero que algún día pueda observar un sola flor.

Se reproduce por semillas.

Ya lo he dicho antes, no soporta las heladas, salvo si son muy breves, ligeras y con poca humedad y el ejemplar se encuentra en un punto protegido.

Common name: Flanboyant, Royal Poinciana

This tree is perhaps the most beautiful flowering tree in the world. Unfortunately it´s cold sensitive and it doesn´t withstand frosts. For me the only fact of surviving the winter is enough.

It´s a tree that, in tropical or subtropical areas, grows about 12 metres tall with a flat canopy that may be even wider than its height. Here in Recregarden it´s deciduous. Its bipinnate leaves resembles fern fronds.

In the part of Spain where Recregarden is I only know another two specimens (here is a picture of one of them with a solitary flower) and both grow in warmer spots. I hope I will see a single flower one day.

Propagation is easy by seeds. But you need flowers to get seeds without buying them!

I´ve said it before, it´s frost tender.
