ALPINIA ZERUMBET "VARIEGATA"

Origen: Asia tropical y subtropical

Las alpinias son plantas rizomatosas ampliamente cultivadas en zonas subtropicales y tropicales. De este rizoma salen falsos tallos que en realidad son sólo las bases de las hojas fuertemente enrolladas.

Necesitan un ambiente cálido, alta humedad y sombra o semi-sombra.

Esta especie es una de las más resistentes. Puede alcanzar más de 2 metros de altura. Algo menos en la variedad "variegata". Esta especie produce racimos de flores, blancas por fuera y amarillas y rojas en su interior. En Recregarden esta planta aún no ha florecido.

Las alpinias se reproduven por división del rizoma.

Soporta heladas débiles si se cultivan en un lugar protegido. Los rizomas son más resistentes pero si la parte aérea muere en invierno el siguiente verano la planta no florecerá.

Alpinias are rhizomatous plant widely grown in subtropical and tropical areas. The above ground shoots are in fact false stems consinting in tighly furled leaves bases.

They need warm temperatures, shade and high humidity.

This species is one of the hardiest. It can grow more than 2 metres high, some less in the case of "variegata" cultivar. It has sprays of flowers that are white outside and yellow and reddish inside. In Recregarden this plant hasn´t bloomed yet.

Propagation is by dividing the rhizoma. 

This species withstands light frosts if grown in a shletered place. Rhizomas are hardier but if the aerial part dies in winter the plant won´t bloom next summer.
