GAULTHERIA PROCUMBENS

GAULTHERIA PROCUMBENS

English version:
Origin: native to China, but cultivated for millennia elsewhere in Asia, being traded along the Silk Road to southwest Asia and Europe. The epithet babylonica in this Chinese species' scientific name (S. babylonica), as well as the related common names "Babylon willow" or "Babylon weeping willow", derive from a misunderstanding by Linnaeus that this willow was the tree described in the Bible in the opening of Psalm 137.
Common name: Weeping Willow, Babylon Willow.
It´s a medium- to large-sized decidous tree, growing up to 15 metres or more tall. It´s a rapid growing tree but has a short lifespan, between 40 to 75 years.
Propagation is easy by cuttings. In fact "willow water" is used for rooting others plants cuttings. For that you must take some branches of current growth from any willow species, then cut them into litlle pieces and smash them with a hammer, or cut them lengthwise. Drop them in a pot of boiling water (do not boil the willows themselves), remove from the heat and allow them to steep. After the mixture cools it is ready to use by soaking in it the cuttings you want to root for 1-2 days. This operation liberates auxins, plant hormones that promote root initiations. For this reason this "water" is also very good for the firsts waters of plants after transplanting.
Very cold hardy.
