ACANTHUS MOLLIS

ACANTHUS MOLLIS

English version:
Origin: both sides of Mediterranean Sea.
Common name: bear´s breeches
Being native to african and asiatic steppes, acanthus has been used in gardening from long time ago, becoming wild in all its distribution area.
Leaves are the model of the carved motifs used to decorate the capitals of Corinthian columns. A legend says that was Calimaco who had that idea after observing acanthus leaves in a basket.
Acanthus means "thorn" in greek, due to the thorns we can find in the flower spikes of this plant. (See them in pictures)
In hot summer areas, like Recregarden, it likes moist and shady places.
It´s frost hardy.
Propagation is by division or from root cuttings. Sometimes it selfseeds easily as you can see in the last pictures.
