MEDINILLA MAGNIFICA

Origen: Filipinas.

Se trata de un arbusto que, en su Filipinas nativa, crece de forma epífita y que suele cultivarse como planta de interior. (Aunque no es fácil su cultivo ni siquiera en interior)

En Recregarden hemos tratado de cultivarla en el exterior, aún sabiendo que difícilmente sobrevive a temperaturas inferiores a los 10º C. Resistió aparentemente bien la primera mitad del invierno (con temperaturas de hasta 5º C) pero luego, y cuando decidimos resguardarla en un lugar más protegido, perdió todas las hojas y murió.

Teóricamente se reproduce por semillas o esquejes (lo intentamos por esquejes sin éxito).

No soporta las bajas temperaturas.

Common name: Medinilla, Malaysian Orchid.

It´s an erect shrub that grows as an epiphyte in its native Philippines and it´s usually grown as indoor plant (although even as an indoor plant its cultivation is difficult).

Here in Recregarden we´ve tried to grow it outdoor although we knew that it rarely survives to temperatures under 10ªC (50º F). In the first half of the winter it withstood with no damages temperatues as low as 5ºC (41º F), but later, in spite of taking it to a sheltered place, it lost all its leaves and after that died.

Propagation is (theoretically) by seeds or cuttings (we´ve tried this way without success).

It doesn´t withstand low temperatures.
