Epiphyllum significa en griego "sobre la hoja". Se trata de cactus epífitos de tallos engrosados y planos que han sido hibridados desde muy antiguo. Suelen conocerse como "cactus pluma" (por la forma de sus tallos) o cactus orquidea.

Los frutos son comestibles, aunque es muy difícil que fructifiquen fuera del trópico.

Sus flores son grandes y muy vistosas.

Este cultivar floreció en 2011por primera vez después de varios años en Recregarden. Fue sólo una flor: la flor se abrió al atardecer y duró un par de días. Cada año el número de flores aumenta: este año han sido más de 10. 

Soporta heladas débiles.

Epiphyllum means "over the leaf" in greek. They´re epiphytic plants with broad and flat stems. Common names are orchid cacti or leaf cacti (although what looks like a leaf are stems). The´ve been hybridize since long ago.

Fruits are edible but it´s difficult to obtain them outside the tropics. 

Flowers are big and showy.

This cultivar bloomed in 2011 for first time after some years in Recregarden. It was just a single flower: it opened on sunset lasting a couple of days.

It withstands light frosts.
