CYPERUS INVOLUCRATUS













CYPERUS INVOLUCRATUS (sin. Cyperus alternifolius)

Origen: Madagascar

Pariente del famoso papiro egipcio, esta especie es más pequeña (algo más de un metro de altura) y tiene un crecimiento menos invasivo.

Crece en márgenes de ríos y en aguas estancadas, aunque es capaz de soportar condiciones de cultivo más secas que el papiro común.

Se reproduce fácilmente por división o por esquejes. Se corta un "paraguas" con unos 15 cm de tallo, se corta la punta de las hojas del "paraguas" y se introduce en tierra húmeda "al revés", con las hojas hacia abajo. También se puede reproducir por semillas pero éstas son tan pequeñas que es muy difícil manipularlas.

Soporta heladas débiles.

Common name: Umbrella sedge

Relative to the more famous egyptian papyrus, this species is smaller (about 1 metre tall) and its growing is less invasive.
As its cousin it likes wet and boggy areas but can withstands also drier growing conditions.
Propagation is easy by division or by cuttings. "Umbrellas" roots easily if they are planted in wet sand upside down. Propagation is also easy by seeds but they are very litthe and very difficult to handle.
It withstands light frosts.
