PASSIFLORA EDULIS

Origen: se considera originaria de la región amazónica, aunque crece silvestre desde el sur de Venezuela y Colombia hasta el Norte de Argentina y Uruguay.

Es quizás la especie más cultivada por sus frutos. Existen dos variedades principales: P. edulis flavicarpa, de fruto amarillo, y P. edulis edulis, de fruto morado.

Es sensible a las heladas y necesita calor para fructificar. El fruto tarda mucho en madurar, al menos aquí en Recregarden. Hay que cogerlo cuando se vuelve morado pero la superficie es aún lisa. Para comerlo se debe esperar a que se vuelva rugosa.

Common name: passionfuit

Origin: it´s considered to be originally native to amazonic region but it´s found growing in the wild from the south of Venezuela and Colombia to the north of Argentina and Uruguay.

This species is perhaps the most appreciate for its fruit. We can find two main varieties: P. edulis flavicarpa with yellow fruits and P. edulis edulis with purple fruits.

It´s frost tender and need warm temperatures to produce fruits. Here in Recregarden fruits take a long time to ripen. The fruit must be pick when the skin turns purple and is still smooth, but must not be eaten until the skin is wrinkled.
