CROSSANDRA INFUNDIBULIFORMIS

Origen: Sur de India y Sri Lanka (Ceilán)

Es un pequeño subarbusto que puede alcanzar un metro de altura, no más de 40 ó 50 cm en cultivo, donde se comporta como una vivaz de corta vida. 

En inglés recibe el nombre vulgar de "firecracker flower" (literalmente flor petardo) porque las vainas con las semillas, una vez secas, explotan cuando se mojan o hay mucha humedad ambiental, esparciendo las semillas, lo que hace que, con circunstancias de cultivo apropiadas, pueda llegar a convertirse en invasiva.

No soporta las bajas temperaturas por lo que en climas templados suele cultivarse como planta de interior. Nosotros en Recregarden hemos intentado cultivarla en un porche orientado al sur. Sobrevivió casi todo el invierno, muriendo, paradójicamente, cuando ya había pasado lo peor.

Al parecer se reproduce por semillas o esquejes. En Recregarden lo hemos intentado sin éxito.

It´s a little subshrub that may grow one meter tall, but not more than 40 or 50 cm in cultivation behaving as a short lived perennial. 

It´s called "Firecracker flower" because pods, once dried up, tends to explode when near high humidity or rainfall. This explosion helps the seeds to "travel" creating new seedlings. Under optimal conditions it can become a weed. 

It hasn´t withstand low temperatures so in temperate regions is grown as a indoor plant. Here in Recregarden we´ve grown it in a sheltered porch. It survived most of winter (in fact a warm one, without frosts) but died when the winter was finishing and temperatures were raising. 

Propagation is by seeds or cuttings. Here in Recregarden we´ve tried both with no success.
