Origen: regiones tropicales del Sudeste asiático y sur de China.
Es una planta herbácea perenne que crece desde un rizoma cilíndrico y carnoso.
No crece más de un metro.
Tiene una de las flores más originales del mundo vegetal y, por ellas, es conocida como "planta murciélago" o "bigotes de gato".
En Recregarden conseguimos que nos regalara con una flor el verano pasado. Lamentablemente un insecto mordisqueó los bordes de las brácteas antes de que éstas se desplegasen por completo.
A finales de verano y principios de otoño de 2015 ha florecido de nuevo. En esta ocasión han sido dos flores.

Requiere calor y mucha humedad ambiental.
Se reproduce por división del rizoma y por semillas (aunque esto segundo es lento y difícil).
No soporta el frío. Aunque este invierno ha soportado, en lugar seco y resguardado, temperaturas de casi 5ºC.

It´s a perennial plant that grows from a cylindrical and fleshy rhizome.
It doesn´t grow more than a meter.
It has one of the most original flowers in the world and, for them, is known as "bat plant" or "cat´s whiskers".

Propagation is by dividing the rhizome and by seeds (although this second method is slow and difficult).
