Origen: América Central

Es un subarbusto que no suele alcanzar más de un metro de altura. Destaca por su tronco engrosado. Es caduca, perdiendo las hojas en invierno, momento en el que debe mantenerse totalmente seca. 

No soporta las bajas temperaturas y menos con humedad. Frío unido a humedad conducen a pudrición segura. En Recregarden hemos tratado de cultivarla dos veces, manteniéndola en invierno en un lugar resguardado y totalmente seca y, aún así, en ambas ocasiones se pudrió. 

Se reproduce por semillas, aunque en Recregarden no lo hemos conseguido. Cuando las cápsulas que contienen las semillas se secan, éstas salen disparadas.

It´s a sub-shrub that rarely reaches more than a meter high. It´s remarkable by its swollen trunk. It´s deciduous, losing their leaves in winter, when it must be kept completely dry.

It doesn´t withstand low temperatures. With low temperatures and humidity it rots.  In Recregarden we have tried to grow it twice, keeping it in winter in a sheltered place and completely dry but, in spite of that, on both occasions rotted.

Propagation is by seeds, although in Recregarden we haven´t succeeded. When the pods containing the seeds dry up, they exploit throwing the seeds away.
