IRIS PSEUDOACORUS

Origen: regiones templadas del hemisferio norte. Crece de forma natural en Europa hasta Siberia por el este y hasta el norte de Africa por el sur. Naturalizada en amplias zonas de Norteamérica.

Es un lirio que crece en zonas pantanosas y en las riberas de ríos. Tiene hojas lanceoladas que pueden alcanzar más de metro y medio. Grandes flores amarillas aparecen desde marzo hasta junio. Crece a partir de un rizoma subterráneo de crecimiento horizontal. Aunque es fundamentalmente una planta acuática, los rizomas pueden sobrevivir a situaciones prolongadas de sequía. 

Aunque es perenne, en invierno las hojas suelen amustiarse, rebrotando con fuerza al final del invierno. 

Se propaga por semillas o mucho más fácilmente, por división del rizoma. 

Ha tenido muchos usos a lo largo de los siglos. Las raíces secas y hechas polvo fueron usadas como tabaco; las semillas tostadas como café; las flores usadas para extraer un tinte amarillo; los rizomas como un potente laxativo. Aunque tanto las hojas como el rizoma son venenosos para el ganado.

Origin:  temperate regions throughout the northern hemisphere. It occurs naturally in Europe, eastward to Siberia and south to northern Africa. Naturalized in North America.

Common name: Yellow flag, Water Flag, Yellow Iris

It grows at the margins of ponds, lakes or streams, or directly in the shallow water. It has sword shaped leaves up to 1.5 m long and profuse yellow flowers. It grows from a subterranean rhizome. Although it´s primarily an aquatic plant, the rhizomes can survive prolonged dry conditions. 

Propagation is by seeds or, more easily, by dividing the rhizome. 

It has had many uses over the centuries. The dried and powdered roots were used as a snuff; the seeds were roasted and prepared like coffee; the flowers were used to make a yellow dye; the rhizomes were used as a powerful laxative. But both leaves and rhizomes are poisonous for cattle.
